Psittacido Herpesvirus 1

Psittacido herpesvirus 1 (PsHV-1) is a DNA virus which has been recognized four genotypes, with different regional distribution. Is causing Pacheco's disease, an acute, highly contagious and often lethal in psittacine birds. It has been suggested a role for the PsHV-1 in tumor development, as they have repeatedly found their genome sequences in mucosal papillomas of parrots. Pacheco's disease may present with nonspecific symptoms such as depression, anorexia, diarrhea and tremors, while other birds do not develop symptoms, becoming chronic carriers of the virus. (2, 4)
As the signs of clinical disease in chickens vary widely and the diagnosis may be complicated further by the different responses to infection in different hosts, clinical signs alone do not have a reliable basis for the diagnosis of Pacheco's disease.
